Reformation of a newspaper site: Step 1
Who would think I’d have trouble picking a platform.
Roll my own, Drupal, Wordpress, OpenACS, Joomla, People Aggregator?
The list goes on. Granted, I’m leaning toward PHP systems. I know it best.
I like Postgresql but I’ll take MySQL. Don’t think I’m interested in a commercial DB.
It’s definitely Unix or Linux. I tend to like FreeBSD.
Aside from OpenACS, all run on Apache.
Drupal looks great, but it’s always a struggle learning new ways to do things that are simply achieved with PHP.
Cobbling together systems is also always a pain. I like clean data. Yet, who can argue that Wordpress is a great solution for the blogs that will be on the site.
There is just too much good stuff out there.
I’m leaning towards simpler rather than a monster like Plone. Master the basics and build on.

I’m personally curious about Drupal having never used it, but seen it having something of a buzz amongst various blogs and podcasts I read/listen to. Of course, the Wordpress Frankenstein is an interesting option. How much interest is there in the writing staff about blogging?
Despite my evangelistic tendencies towards Linux when it comes to servers, we’ll be utilizing a .Net architecture because a number of the important financial features are already written in .Net and we want a common architecture. However, for the content side there is an open source content management system that is apparently popular with the Dutch called Umbraco for .Net. I’m running some tests with it now.
Cheers, James.
Hi Matt:
I check on you from time to time. The Grad Center is getting rev’ed up and will soon I hope have a decent Alumni site. They will be using Joomla. Jen and some others from the formerly MacroMedia Users Group - now the Adobe users group are working on this.
Because the Grad Center Admin’s will be able to do some basic administration on it with limited support.
I’ll let you know - when you can come play with it. Also wanted to give you a heads up … next year is the Grad Center’s 10th birthday. We want to do something good - so save the date around mid July 2008 - we’ll need your expertise - you are doing some kool stuff - and I’d like to see you demo some for us.
Keep in touch.
